RAIL TRANSIT SYSTEMS:
CHARACTERISTICS, DESIGN, PRESENT AND FUTURE ROLE
Dr Vukan Vuchic is UPS Foundation Professor of Transportation Systems Engineering and Professor of City and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania, which he joined in 1967. He has lectured at 80 other universities, at many professional conferences and scientific institutions and authored about 150 publications. His research, focusing mostly on urban transportation, has been published in his “Transit Trilogy:” Transportation for Livable Cities (1999), Urban Transit Operations, Planning and Economics (2005), and Urban Transit Systems and Technology (2007).
In 1982 Dr Vukan Vuchic became the first recipient of the “Dr. Friedrich Lehner Medal” in Germany. In 1990 he was awarded the University of Pennsylvania’s UPS Foundation Chair in Transportation. He is a Foreign Member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) and of the Russian Academy for Architecture and Construction Sciences (RAASN).
He has been consultant to several national departments of transportation, many cities and transit agencies. He is now a member of the International Advisory Panel for the Land Transport Authority, statutory board under the Minister of Transport of Singapore.

Ms Barbara A. Nadel, FAIA, Principal of Barbara Nadel Architect (BNA), is an award-winning architect, author, and journalist, specializing in building security, planning, programming, and design of civic infrastructure and institutional facilities. Her experience includes transportation, cultural, healthcare, justice, educational, and commercial development projects.
Since establishing BNA in 1992, Ms Nadel has worked with the world’s leading institutions, owners, design and construction professionals, and over 40 government agencies in the U.S. and internationally. Her accomplishments are multi-disciplinary, global, collaborative, and widely recognized.
Ms Nadel is editor-in-chief of Building Security: Handbook for Architectural Planning and Design (McGraw-Hill, 2004), for which she received the 2005 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Institute Honors for Collaborative Achievement and the 2003 Milka Bliznakov Prize from the International Archive of Women in Architecture (IAWA), for creating this security resource.
She was 2001 AIA National Vice President, a two-term member of the AIA National Board of Directors, 2002 AIA Committee on Architecture for Justice Chair, and has held many professional leadership positions. In recognition of her many significant achievements, Ms. Nadel received the prestigious 2009 AIA Edward C. Kemper Award for service to the architectural profession.

Mr Lim Eng Hwee is the Chief Planner & Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). As an urban planner, Mr Lim has extensive experience in strategic and local planning, implementation of land use policies and development initiatives. He has also served in the Ministry of National Development and Ministry of Trade and Industry, overseeing urban development and economic development policies and initiatives.
Mr Lim graduated with a Bachelor of Planning from the University of Auckland in 1989 and a Master in Public Administration from Harvard University in 1997. |

CONVERSION OF A DRIVEN METRO SYSTEM TO A DRIVERLESS ONE: AUTOMATION OF PARIS METRO LINE 1
Dr Laurent Fourtuneis the Director delegate of Engineering Division at Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens, RATP. He has extensive experience in transportation systems planning, management and implementation. He led 40 investment projects on Paris Public transport system, totalling 300M euros of spending per year, and set up engineering teams to coordinate the projects, and consensus buildup with local councils and neighbourhoods on projects.
Dr Fourtune graduated with a PHD in physics, with honours from Ecole Normale Supérieure (Paris, France) in 1994 and a Master of Transport Management from Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (Paris, France) in 1996.

 Professor Brian Mellitt

FULLY AUTOMATED RAIL TRANSIT IS THE ECONOMIC SOLUTION FOR INTERMEDIATE CAPACITY CITY TRANSPORT
Professor Brian Mellitt has worked in non executive, strategic business development and railway engineering specialist roles with major UK and international companies since retiring from the board of Railtrack Plc in 1999. He has also acted as Rail Adviser to N M Rothschild for international railway restructuring projects and provides consultancy services for major organisations in rail transport through his own company BMCONSULT Ltd. Since 1999 he has undertaken assignments for organisations in Hong Kong, Ireland, Singapore, Australia, Taiwan and the UK.
He was Director of Engineering and Production and Group Board Member of Railtrack PLC from 1995 to 1999, Director of Engineering and Board Member of London Underground Limited from 1988 to 1995, and Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Head of the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering, University of Birmingham, prior to his appointment at London Underground Limited.
Professor Mellitt is Honorary Professor of Electronics at the University of Birmingham, Past-President of the IEE (now IET) and the Welding Institute, Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, UK, and Honorary Life Fellow of the Association of Project Managers. He holds honorary doctorates from 3 UK universities.
